What is/are your books about?
My books are based from the horror genre. I’ve always had a fascination with the supernatural and suspense- something I always enjoy writing.
Does writing exhaust of energize you?
A little of both. Writing something you love can really make you feel on top of the world but formatting can make you hit rock bottom in no time.
What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?
Censorship- it’s putting duct tape on an artist’s mouth just because someone doesn’t like it, and I despise the practice.
Do you try to be more original or deliver to readers what they want?
It can be a mixed bag- oftentimes it can be best to create something original but you need to listen to your audience first and foremost. It’s good to utilize both.
Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
I think understanding emotions is a very important element in writing but it doesn’t mean you need to be emotional or go through trauma. Even as I had brain cancer 20 years ago it never changed my status of artistic representation.
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
Learning how to properly format a book- I’ve created at least two revisions for my first book just to fit the proper formats.
Music or silence?
In the words of director/writer/animator Ralph Bakshi “Jazz is a drug- and I’m addicted”. If I can’t listen to Jazz while I’m writing then it’s nothing.
Million dollar question- are you currently working on another book?
Always have new material to work on- even as I’ve written 4 volumes for my horror story series ‘Vault of the Ghouls’ I have plans for 16. Always writing as much and as often as I can. As far as what I’m working on now- I’ve always wanted to write about vampires.
Why the name Better Brains Books?
As a kid I grew up watching the cult classic ‘Mystery Science Theatre 3000’- a show where a host and two robots make fun of Z rated movies (the worst kind of movies). The studio that worked on it was named Best Brains Studios and as I was preparing some projects I came up with Better Brains. After I started writing books I settled on Better Brains Books.
Thank you for talking to me today, William.
